A Taste of Ann Arbor

No Comments | Tags: , , , , , , ,

If you are a Foodie, and/or wine, beer, or cocktail enthusiast, Ann Arbor—located about 40 miles from downtown Detroit—is definitely for you! To say that the culinary and beverage scene here is off the chain would be a complete understatement.

Recently named “Best Midwest Food Towns” by Midwest Living, there are 300 restaurants within a 20-mile radius encompassing a wide range of ethnic specialties, and oodles of wine and specialty cocktail bars and brew pubs, including six microbreweries.

Among the latter are Vinology Wine Bar and Restaurant, Grizzly Peak Brewing Company, Mark’s Carts & Bill’s Beer Garden, Arbor Brewing Company, Ugly Dog Distillery, World of Beer and The Last Word Bar.

All epicurean roads here point to the year-round Ann Arbor Farmers Market, a producers-only market where all of the farm fresh meats and poultry, dairy, produce, specialty product items, baked goods, oils and vinegars, honeys, plants, handcrafts, and a great deal more are grown, baked, crafted or produced in some way by the vendors selling them here.

These and other Ann Arbor area and Michigan producers have been at the forefront of the farm-to-table movement for decades, and continue to play a pivotal role in presenting and preserving the quality, dedication, and generations-old tradition of creating a sustainable food culture that has been emulated in cities around the country and across the globe.

Gastronomic Excellence

In town you will find numerous A-list publication food, wine and spirits nominees and award-winning chefs that together have created some of the most amazing gastronomic dining experiences. Yet despite their lofty accolades, they still manage to capture the relaxed, unpretentious ambience, flavor and flair that embodies the Ann Arbor community, while also aptly reflecting the rich, close knit, ethnically diverse community of folks who have brought their distinctive traditional recipes, ingredients and culinary styles to the area.

In just a few days’ time, you can exuberantly work your way from one gastronomic adventure to another, thoroughly enjoying each has to offer from décor to ambiance, presentation, creativity and flavor.

Among these are the Blue Nile Ethiopian Restaurant, which in both the cuisine, table settings and ambiance offers the experience of a traditional royal Ethiopian feast; Conor O’Neill’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, the only authentic Irish pub in Ann Arbor where everything from the restaurant itself to most all of the food products (flour, sausages, ciders, etc.) were designed, built and raised/grown in Ireland; The Slurping Turtle focusing on Japanese comfort food; Mezzevino, serving excellent Mediterranean small plates with a twist; and Isalita, whose menu is derived from the regional street stall food of México, just to name a few.

Other worthy eateries in and around town include Ayse’s Turkish Café, Pacific Rim by Kana, Aventura, The Chop House, The Black Pearl, VellumR.U.B. BBQ Pub, Frita Batidos and Logan—An American Restaurant. With so many options to choose from, you’re sure to find several outstanding establishments to suit your particular taste, desire and budget.
