For an island of only approximately 21,000 year-round residents, St. Simons Island—part of The Golden Isles of Georgia located about 65 miles north of Jacksonville, FL, 75 miles south of Savannah, and 280 miles southeast of Atlanta along Georgia’s southeast Atlantic coast—offers a huge number (close to 70) of outstanding cafés and bakeries, mom ‘n pop bistros, casual restaurants, and fine dining establishments – most all family-owned. Their unique coastal-niche dishes are often focused around the plethora of fresh marsh and sea fare in the area.

Among them are Sandcastle Café and Grill, an island landmark for over 25 years for their sumptuous and hearty breakfast buffet and lunch dishes. Be sure not to miss their humongous yet light and fluffy Belgium waffles with deep grooves to hold your favorite toppings.

If you like Vidalia onion pie, crab cakes, fried green tomatoes, grilled, blackened, or fried chicken or fish, or pimento cheese sandwiches, then Gnat’s Landing is the place for you! Among their well-known specialties are the Seafood Gumbo made with shrimp, oysters, scallops, crab, and Andouille sausage, amazing, succulent BOFS and BOFO’s (bowl of fried shrimp and bowl of fried oysters, respectively), and the Crunchy Cole Slaw made sans mayo with ramen, toasted almonds, sesame seeds, and a house vinaigrette, just to name a few.

Described as “sophisticated yet relaxed, trendy yet traditional, Georgia Sea Grill is fine dining at its best. Think upscale cocktails and award-winning wines paired with dishes like crab stuffed hushpuppies, fried lobster tacos, Georgia bison carpaccio, cashew encrusted Verlasso salmon and pork tenderloin scaloppini.

Southern Soul Barbeque is known far and wide as one of the best bbq joints in the country. Mouthwatering, taste bud tempting dishes here include brisket chili, smoked chicken and turkey breasts, pulled pork, Brunswick stew, smoked sausage and burnt end sandwiches, rib slabs, burnt ends, pork sliders, and an array of delicious sides like hush puppies, fried green beans, Hoppin’ John, and collard greens.

Made completely from scratch dishes highlighted by fresh seafood, beef, poultry, and game take center stage at Halyards Restaurant, while Palmer’s Village Café delights with breakfast and lunch all day items including challah bread French toast, steak and eggs, fish tacos, shrimp and grits and build your own biscuits.

For outstanding rustic Argentinean/Italian artisan eats try Del Sur Artisan Eats, or Tara Thai & Sushi for authentic Thai specialties and succulent sushi.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of the gastronomic eats to be found in St. Simons Island.
