When one thinks of culinary adventures in México, fresh seafood and signature, regional Mexican dishes no doubt come to mind. So does a wealth of international specialties from Italian to Chinese, Lebanese, Sushi, Caribbean, French, Spanish, Greek, Scandinavian, British and other fare, given that people from around the globe come to visit and live in all parts of the country.

Likewise, you can find a great many of these delicious dishes in Ciudad Cancún, a thriving city of over 750,000 people situated only a short bus or taxi ride away from the frenetic coastal Hotel Zone, instantly immersing you into a different world – the real México.

You will also find a wealth of delicious, healthy, vegetarian and vegan restaurants, each serving up their unique tastes on classic dishes, peppering them (pun intended) with their own flavor and flair.

Among some of the more well-known are La Troje, 100% Natural, Gopal’s Comida Vegetariana, Cheester (two locations), and, if you’d rather have the food brought to you in your hotel or rental apartment or condo, Cocina Vegetariana Satviko Mexico is a vegetarian delivery service.

For vegans, the standout is definitely Vegan Planet

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the focus here is on fresh, clean, savory, clean eating, and even the ambiance of this 10 or so table restaurant speaks to this.

To start your day, choose from their extensive menu of fresh juices and smoothies, and fresh wheatgrass shots to give your system a welcome, healthy a.m. jolt.

Breakfast entrees include the Muesli bowl with warm granola oats, nuts, dried and fresh fruit, and almond milk; the Molletes made with macadamia cheese, beans, guacamole, and pico de gallo; and the gluten-free pancakes served with fresh fruit sweetened with agave honey and strawberries.

For lunch or dinner, start with their vegan take on the traditional Mexican Sopes or Chilaquiles, Enmoladas (homemade mole, onion, mixed greens, stuffed potatoes, sesame seeds, and rice), or Enfrijoladas (stuffed potatoes with an Indian nut sour cream, onion and avocado.

For a little bit of grazing try their Ensalada Quinoa (mixed organic greens, organic quinoa, avocado, cherry tomatoes, and parmesan cheese with a hemp seed oil dressing and lime juice), Ensalada Alcalina (mixed vegetables with marinated Portobello mushrooms, tomatoes, macadamia nuts, hemp seeds, avocado and a mandarin lime dressing)) or, in season, the Ensalada Aquacate y Mango (with avocado and mango).

The main dishes here are outstanding, like the Burrito Fuego (Fire Burrito) made with mixed greens, mushrooms, onion, pimentos seasoned with habanera chili, and homemade salsa. Then there’s the pizzas, including the Pita Pizza Líbano (Lebanese Pita Pizza) with hummus, arugula, tomatoes, and roasted mushrooms. Even the Hamburguesa Clasica (Classic Hamburger) highlights Vegan Planet’s flair with quinoa, seeds, and nuts, accompanied with roasted potatoes.

The Yakimeshi is fashioned with integral rice, carrots, pumpkin, and pimentos, and served with nori chips and avocado, while the Sopa de Lentejas (Lentil Soup) is a savory mix of lentils, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and pimentos, also served with nori chips and avocado.

On the raw side of things, the Burrito Nori (Nori Burrito) is amazing! They take dehydrated falafel and mix it with sauerkraut, avocado and mustard, then wrap it with nori. And the Tacos Falafel (Falafel Tacos) are wrapped in lettuce leaves with tomatoes, cucumbers, and hemp seed, and served with chipotle cheese and catsup.

Vegan Planet does not skimp when it comes to their five dessert options either, including Choco Crepa (a raw cacao grenache), Super Helado (Super Ice Cream), Sinfonía de Chocolate (Chocolate Symphony), and Frutipay (Fruit Pie). But the stand out here is the Cheesecake, also raw. This delightful dish is made with almonds, fresh coconut pulp and nuts, and glazed with raspberries and a fresh coulis, and is to die for!

Vegan Planet (18)

All organic superfoods are abundant here as well to take home, including spicy almonds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, cacao, chia seeds, goji berries, sea salt, matcha, chlorella, spirulina, cayenne pepper and more.

Vegan Planet (25)

Organic vegan cookies, muffins, banana and banana and coconut breads, and a handful of other baked goods are ready to grab and go, while the cold take out case has Greek olives, kombucha, hummus and fresh breads, and almost everything here is also gluten free.

Vegan Planet is a true Cuidad Cancun gem, and an intimate look at how the world could, or perhaps even should, eat.
