Relief for Puerto Rico

No Comments | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Embraced by both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the smallest of the Greater Antilles and also encompassing the boutique islands of Culebra and Vieques, draws millions of tourists from around the world each year to enjoy its amazing fusion of vibrant people, multi-hued façades, intoxicating scents and jaw-dropping scenery.

In 2017, the islands were hit by two category 5 hurricanes—Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria—their wrath resulting in the most devastating natural disasters the island have ever experienced in their long and storied history.

One of many efforts to aid the people of Puerto Rico, many of whom are still living without power or fresh water, is by hip-hop pioneer and Rock Steady Crew founder Richard “Crazy Legs” Colón. As a resident of Isabella, Puerto Rico and an active member of the community, Colón sprang into action immediately following the hurricanes, assembling resources to support his neighbors.

Those efforts resulted in a unique partnership with Waves for Water, a non-profit organization whose mission is to work on the front-line to provide clean water to communities in need around the world, and Red Bull, the energy drink company. Together, they are distributing water filtration systems to the hurricane victims, helping to restore power, and providing access to safe spaces for youth. To date, more than 600 water filtration systems have been provided, impacting over 80,000 people with thousands more being reached each day.

Colón is reaching out and encouraging the global community to help raise funds to provide ongoing relief for the citizens of Puerto Rico through an inspiring documentary, a GoFundMe page, and the Crazy Legs Facebook page.

Travel to Puerto Rico

Tourism is the primary industry that supports Puerto Rico, and will continue to be so as the island rebuilds. If you’re thinking about visiting Puerto Rico, or already have booked a trip, you can get more information from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC). The most recent message posted on the website from José Izquierdo, the organization’s Executive Director, said:

“For the past few weeks, the PRTC has been collaborating with government agencies and the private sector to provide immediate relief while ensuring the safety of all visitors and residents. The support received to date has been remarkable and we continue to welcome relief efforts from partners who are interested in helping the people of Puerto Rico as we focus on rebuilding our Island.”
