There are oodles of wonderful travel resources out there designed to inspire you to broaden your horizons and explore all the world has to offer. From books, to magazines, blog posts, websites, industry showcases, travel programs and more, you can find them, literally, all over the globe.

But what about giving back to those places that have played a hand in feeding your wanderlust?

That’s where Passports with Purpose comes in.

Giving Back - 2

Founded in 2008 as a way to “build community among travel bloggers and to give back to the places we, as travelers, visit,” Passports with Purpose has set annual goals to raise funds for specific causes in different areas of the world.

In their first year, they raised $7,400 for Heifer International, a year later, raising almost $30,000 to build a school in Cambodia in conjunction with World Assistance for Cambodia.

Giving Back – 3

Other projects over the years have included creating schools and funding adult literacy programs in Mali, building two libraries in Zambia, and raising over $110,000 for Water.org, which works to create sustainable market-based solutions that change lives every day through access to water and sanitation, just to name a few.

According to the organization’s website: “Each year the Passports with Purpose board members select a charity based on several criteria, along with our sense of what would inspire us and the travel blogging community. … We like causes that help people in poverty, especially women and children. … We’re open to working anywhere in the world. Because we place a value on all human lives being of equal value, we especially like countries and causes where our dollars impact many people.”

Giving Back - 5

What really sets the organization apart from most global fundraising and project efforts, is that they are steadfast in that their projects must include a transition plan defining the next steps towards self-sustainability after their financial support comes to an end.

So whether you are an avid traveler, or just venture out every once in a while, consider giving back to the world and allow your travels to take on a greater purpose.
